Southeast Georgia ~ If you are looking for sea, sun and fun then you would love it here. Brunswick and the Golden Isles are filled with natural beauty and history. Lots of white sandy beaches, live oaks, ferns, azaleas, and my favorite, wisteria! Bikes, walking and Red Bugs are the best way to see the islands. There is so much to see and do here.....and it is only minutes away from my front door!
Historic Downtown Brunswick is a perfect place for date night, especially on the first Friday of the month. The shops, art galleries and cafes open their doors at 5:30 and as you stroll up and down Newcastle you hear the sounds of live music, see people mingling in small groups and smell delicious foods. Art Downtown/Gallery 209 a renovated warehouse space located on the waterfront is a must stop when in the area.
Jekyll Island's Historic District is filled with shops in landmark homes with so much character. You don't want to miss Goodyear Cottage where you will find a gift shop, art gallery and museum filled with local and visiting artists working in many mediums. The Sweets Shoppe is another great place to find homemade candies and other goodies. Jekyll Books at The Old Infirmary and Just By Hand are just a few of the other places in the historic area you will not want to miss. Rent a bike or a Red Bug if you prefer not to walk among the live oaks. And the kids will love the Sea Turtle Center.
St. Simons Island has it all....beaches that stretch out for hundreds of yards at low tide and great places to eat and shop. We love the burgers and onion rings at Brogen's at Pier Village. After visiting all the shops, beach huts filled with treasures and art galleries take a stroll on the pier and you just might catch a group of dolphins playing. Postell Park in the historic oceanfron Pier Village is a great place for kids with a play area while you sit among the oaks and people watch. Then there is Redfern Village, where you will find more shops and resturants. Bubba Garcia's Mexican Cantina is one of our favorite places to eat. Sitting on the front porch enjoying their Grilled Fish and Shrimp Fajitas you don't even notice the strangers sitting elbow to elbow next to you!
After enjoying Brunswick and the Golden Isles, a short drive north you will find Savannah, known for its historic downtown squares and the shops and restaurants along its waterfront district or south to St. Marys and ride the ferry to the secluded Cumberland Island.
Tell me about great places to visit where you live and you might just find it listed in a future "Places To Visit" blog post. Please feel free to email me ([email protected]) with a little about the place and include a photo or two.
