Miz Katie is a self-taught, mixed media artist working from her home studio in Kansas. She has been selling her work online for over ten years. Miz Katie used to make handmade books, greeting cards, and collages. In 2009, she sold her bookbinding machine, and picked up a paint brush and she has not looked back since.
MP: Please tell us a little about your self and the art you create.
I am a mixed media painter. I am passionate about painting people, using photographs as a tool. I have never actually had someone sit for me yet, but I would love to do that sometime in the future. I also paint cityscapes, and silly looking characters who live in my head. I am currently accepting custom orders.
MP: Do you work on multiply pieces at the same time?
Yes, I have sometimes 10 or more paintings that I'm working on, usually at various stages of completion. Some paintings sit on my easel for weeks, waiting for me to decide how I'm going to finish them. I like to study some of them for long periods of time before deciding if they're finished or not. I need to get a feel for how they're going to look on someone's wall before offering them for sale.
MP: What are two art supplies you don't think you could live without and why?
I guess it would be gesso and paint. Although, I wouldn't be able to accomplish much without brushes and some type of canvas, also. lol My art supplies are pretty basic because I don't need much to get the job done.
MP: Do you set goals for yourself? Are they daily, weekly, etc?
I set goals daily. I always have a list in my head of things I need to get done that day. I hardly ever get as much done as I'd like. The list is too long, and time runs out quickly. There are never enough hours in a day, and I work from the moment I wake up until I fall into bed at night. You could say I'm a bit obsessed when it comes to art.
MP: As an artist, we have many roles; which do you find to be the most rewarding and which the most challenging for you?
The most rewarding is probably when a painting sells. That means that someone out there besides me appreciates the piece enough to want it hanging on their wall. That is quite an honor.
The most challenging aspects are spending too much time alone in the studio, being my own boss, the long work hours, and being patient for sales. Oh, and marketing. I'm not so good at tooting my own horn.
MP: How do you stay in touch with your past and future customers?
Facebook works well for me. I can post new work, new listings, and get feedback when I come across a problem with one of my pieces and want some advice.
MP: Do you have any upcoming projects/books/events/etc we can look forward to seeing in the future?
I am looking forward to being published next year in book. It will be my first time. The book is called Hot Flash, and it's by Pamela Hastings. I'm crossing my fingers that she accepts my submission, and it makes it into the book.
MP: Is there anything you would like the art world to know about you that we did not cover in our interview?
I'd love to invite people to read my blog, friend me on FB or drop by my Youtube channel and watch me paint. I'm always looking for more friends, so don't be shy. Let's stay in touch!
