Have you tried these great mylar stencils created by the talented MaryBeth Shaw? They are great to work with. They measure 9" x 12" which make them especially nice when working in a larger format. How about using "Gears" above in your journal, on canvas or paper?
The three pictured in this post have all been used with paint, glaze, ink, sponge and I even did some tracing using the "RiverRocks" pictured below and "Trees" above was perfect in a background. These are high quality and super easy to work with as well as clean. You won't be disappointed.
